This is one of those DIYs that looks way more complicated than it is. If you can wrap yarn around a rope and handle a hot glue gun without burning your fingerprints off, you can make this. Seriously. No sewing. No measuring. Just hot glue, colorful yarn, and a little bit of patience.

Imagine sitting on your floor with a podcast on, yarn everywhere, and zero expectations—and it turning out better than you could have hoped.

Bright sunlight illuminates a cheerful, no-sew DIY yarn rainbow craft, showcased above a workspace filled with vibrant yarn, handy scissors, and a hot glue gun—inviting crafters of all skill levels to get creative with colorful materials and simple techniques.

What You’ll Need

You can get almost everything at the dollar store or craft aisle at Walmart. Use what you’ve got.

  • Thick rope (or foam tubing, pool noodle, even old electrical cord)
  • Yarn in 6–7 colors (go classic rainbow or pick your own palette)
  • Sharp scissors
  • Hot glue gun + glue sticks
  • Optional: floral wire or pipe cleaners (for shaping)
  • Felt or fabric backing (optional, for stability)
  • String or yarn to hang it up

Step 1: Cut Your Rope

Cut your rope into rainbow layers—each one a little shorter than the last so they’ll nest inside each other. Lay them out to make sure you’ve got a decent arch. It doesn’t have to be perfect; the yarn smooths out the chaos later.

If your rope is super floppy, this is where the wire comes in. Slide a floral wire or pipe cleaner inside each rope piece to help hold the arch shape later. Not required, but helpful.

Step 2: Wrap Each Layer in Yarn

Pick your first color (let’s say red). Glue the yarn end to one side of the rope and start wrapping it tight and close together, covering the entire length. Stop about an inch from the other end and glue it down.

Repeat for each layer. This takes a little time, so put on a show or music and let it be repetitive and kind of meditative.

By the time you get to purple (or whatever color you’re ending on), you’ll feel like a yarn-wrapping pro.

Step 3: Assemble Your Rainbow

Lay your finished, wrapped pieces in a rainbow shape. Adjust until the spacing feels right. Then grab your glue gun and start attaching them. You can glue where each layer touches or glue them all to a backing piece like felt or fabric for extra hold.

Tip: Don’t stress about symmetry—this is handmade, and that’s what makes it beautiful.

Step 4: Add a Hanging Loop

Cut a piece of yarn or string and glue it to the back of the top arch to hang it. That’s it. Want extra flair? Add pom poms or tassels to the ends. Or leave it simple and let the rainbow do the talking.

Final Thoughts

This yarn-wrapped rainbow is soft, bold, and so satisfying to make. It’s perfect for nurseries, offices, playrooms, or anywhere that needs a pop of color and a little joy. And it costs way less than anything similar you’d find online.
