If you’ve got old jeans piling up, don’t toss them — turn them into a functional and rustic denim pocket organizer! Perfect for keys, mail, sunglasses, and all those little things you never know where to put.

Transform old jeans into a stylish denim pocket organizer—perfect for holding sunglasses, jewelry, and stationery. Displayed by a sunny window with plants and a notebook, this DIY project adds charm and practical storage to any space.

What You’ll Need

  • Old jeans (at least 3–5 pairs)
  • Fabric scissors
  • Sewing machine or fabric glue
  • Needle and thread (optional, for touch-ups)
  • Large piece of fabric (like canvas or an old curtain) for the backing
  • Wooden dowel or stick for hanging
  • Twine, ribbon, or rope
  • Iron (optional, for smoothing pockets)

Instructions

1. Gather and Prep Your Materials

  • Select jeans with interesting pocket styles—different washes, stitching, or embellishments add character.
  • Cut out the back pockets, leaving about half an inch of denim around each pocket.

2. Prepare the Backing

  • Cut your large fabric into a rectangle. Size it based on how many pockets you plan to attach.
  • Iron the fabric backing flat if needed.
  • Fold and sew the top edge over by about an inch to create a pocket for your hanging dowel.

3. Arrange Your Pockets

  • Lay out your pockets on the backing to plan your design.
  • Space them evenly or stagger them for a more rustic, casual look.

4. Attach the Pockets

  • Sew each pocket onto the backing using a sewing machine.
  • If you prefer no-sew, use strong fabric glue, but make sure to apply extra around the edges for durability.
  • Reinforce stress points (top corners of the pockets) with extra stitches if sewing.

5. Add the Dowel and Hanger

  • Slide a wooden dowel through the top fold.
  • Tie twine, rope, or ribbon to each end of the dowel for hanging.

6. Finishing Touches

  • Add embellishments like old jean buttons, patches, or fabric paint if you want to customize it further.
  • Hang your new denim organizer by the front door, in the mudroom, or by your desk!
