Let your greenery dangle in style with these dreamy woven creations — the perfect mix of texture, color, and character. If you’ve ever scrolled Instagram and envied that whimsical, artsy plant corner, now’s your chance to bring it home. In this post, I’ll show you how to create these Macrame plant hangers.

Shopping List:

  • Loops & Threads Macrame Cotton Cord
  • Mandala Crafts Natural Wooden Rings
  • Cousin DIY Assorted Large-Hole Wood Beads
  • DuraSteel Ceiling Hook
  • Sharp Craft Scissors
  • 12 ft Measuring Tape

How to Make It — Step by Step

Step 1: Measure and Cut Your Cord

Cut eight equal lengths of macramé cord, each about 12–15 feet long. This gives you enough material for the knots and the hanging length. Adjust longer if you want a deeper drop. Lay them flat to remove any twists before starting.

Step 2: Create the Base Loop

Fold each cord in half, lining up the ends evenly. Slip the folded ends through a wooden ring and pull the loose ends through the loop you just made (a lark’s head knot). Tighten each cord so they sit snugly against the ring. You should now have sixteen hanging strands.

Step 3: Make the Gathering Knot

Cut an extra 18-inch piece of cord. Place it just below the ring and wrap it tightly around all strands 5–6 times. Thread the end through the loop you created, pull the opposite end up through the wrapped section to hide it, and trim off any excess. This forms a clean, secure top section.

Step 4: Create the Decorative Spirals

Divide the cords into four groups of four. Using each group, start tying half square knots repeatedly. As you continue, the knots will twist naturally into a spiral pattern. This is what gives that playful rope twist seen in your photo. Make each spiral about 6–8 inches long for even symmetry.

Step 5: Add the Wood Beads

Thread one wooden bead onto the center two cords of each group. Push the bead up snugly under the spirals. This adds texture and the handcrafted touch that stands out in boho-style hangers.

Step 6: Form the Lower Design

Beneath the beads, tie 4–5 inches of square knots to form the lower decorative section. Keep tension even so the pattern aligns vertically down each strand.

Step 7: Create the Netting for the Pot

Take two cords from one group and two from the adjacent group to tie a square knot, about 3–4 inches below the last knots. Repeat this all around so each section connects — creating diamond-shaped openings. This “net” is what will cradle your plant pot.

Step 8: Tie the Base Support

Once the netting reaches the desired length (depending on your pot height), gather all cords together below the pot area. Tie a strong gathering knot to hold everything securely. This becomes the basket’s base.

Step 9: Finish with Fringe

Trim the ends evenly, leaving a 4–6 inch fringe. You can brush the cords out for a soft, boho finish or leave them twisted for a cleaner look.

Step 10: Insert and Hang

Place your potted plant inside the macramé net, hook the top ring to a ceiling hook, and step back to adjust height and balance. The colorful cords should hang evenly, framing each pot perfectly — just like in the photo.

I can’t wait to see your finished hangers — they’ll be stunning.
