You don’t need a craft room. You don’t need to sew. You don’t even need to know what you’re doing. If you’ve got yarn, scissors, and a glue gun—you’re in. This cloud-shaped pom pom rug is soft, cozy, and completely beginner-friendly. It’s made almost entirely from dollar store supplies, and once you make one, you’ll start eyeing every corner of your house wondering where the next one should go.

Transform your space with a whimsical DIY PomPom Rug! Featuring soft, cloud-like cream tufts interspersed with pastel blue, pink, and purple pom-poms, this easy-to-make accent adds charm and coziness to any room.

What You’ll Need

Everything here is affordable and easy to find. No special tools required.

  • 4–5 skeins of bulky white yarn
  • 1 skein each of 2–3 muted accent colors (think lavender, dusty pink, faded blue)
  • A rubber bath mat, rug gripper pad, or shelf liner
  • Sharp scissors
  • Hot glue gun + glue sticks
  • Optional: cardboard square or pom pom maker

Step 1: Cut Your Base Into a Cloud

First, you’ll need your base. I used a rubber bath mat from the dollar store, but a rug pad or thick felt sheet works too.
Sketch a simple cloud shape—bumpy and soft—and cut it out. Don’t worry about perfect curves. This isn’t precision work. It’s fluff-covered and forgiving.

Step 2: Make the Pom Poms

You’re going to need about 60–80 pom poms. Most of them should be white, with about 15–20 in accent colors to give that dreamy look.

To make one:

  • Wrap yarn around your hand ~100 times.
  • Slide it off and tie tightly in the center with more yarn.
  • Cut through the loops on both sides.
  • Fluff and trim into a round, full ball.

Repeat until your floor looks like a yarn storm hit it. Trust the process.

Step 3: Lay Them Out First

Before you start gluing, arrange the pom poms on your cloud base. Start with the white ones, then sprinkle in your colored poms. Move them around until it looks balanced. This part is just vibes—trust your eye.

Take a photo once you’re happy with the layout so you can reference it later.

Step 4: Glue Like You Mean It

Heat up your glue gun. Working one pom at a time:

  • Add a generous amount of hot glue to the base of the pom
  • Press it firmly onto the mat
  • Hold for a few seconds
  • Repeat, packing them tightly to cover the surface

By the time you’re halfway through, it starts looking less like yarn balls and more like a real rug.

Step 5: Fluff, Trim, and Style

Once everything’s dry, flip the rug gently, shake it out, and trim any messy edges. Fluff the pom poms with your hands until it looks cloud-soft and even.

Then set it down wherever you need a little softness—under your desk, next to your bed, in a reading nook. Instant cozy.

Final Notes

This project costs less than $15, takes a few hours, and makes a space feel completely transformed. It’s soft, handmade, and totally customizable—change the shape, the color palette, or the size. The only rule is: the fluffier, the better.
