As we head into this next year, it’s a great time to reassess your niche websites. Do your current niches overlap with profitable niches? Or is it time to make some changes?
Let’s look at what looks to be some promising and profitable niches for this year – these include solar energy, smart-home devices, and health and fitness.
Choosing a Profitable Niche
When choosing a niche for your niche website, you can’t just pick anything that looks promising.

Yes, you want something profitable, but a profitable niche is only profitable when you have the knowledge needed to share that content and the passion for continuing to share it.
So, for example, we already mentioned solar energy as being an excellent niche for this year. Now, you know absolutely nothing about solar energy, and you have no real desire to learn about it.
Still, you want to make money, so you create a niche site for it.
You pull articles offline and scan through them to create your site, but you make frequent errors because you are paraphrasing something you don’t understand.
Now your content is subpar.
The people coming to your website fall into two categories – those who know about solar energy and who want to learn more, and those who don’t know anything about solar energy and want to learn about it.
For those already knowledgeable about solar power, your lack of knowledge is going to show.
For the people who know nothing about solar power, you are giving them incorrect information, and eventually, they will realize this, and your credibility will go out of the window.
But let’s assume that you faked your way through building a website, and the resulting content reads well.
To keep your website active and respected by search engines, you need to add content regularly.
Do you have the passion required to make those content updates?
The chances are that – while you may start with good intentions – you are eventually going to tire of writing about something you have no passion for.
Your regular updates will taper off, and all of the work you put into building your website will have been wasted.
When you look at a list of profitable niches, choose a niche you know about and a niche you are passionate about sharing with others.
Don’t Go To Broad or Two Narrow
When you choose your website niche, do not choose the first niche you think you will write about.
Spend some time doing your research.
Is there enough content in the niche to write about and enough opportunity to monetize it? Or are you going to run out of content?
Is your niche too broad? If you don’t narrow down a specific niche, you are going to have two problems.
Firstly, it’s going to be difficult to monetize your niche if you don’t have a point of focus.
Secondly, with no point of focus, your content will lack continuity. Without continuity, your site has no draw, and that means that there is no reason for visitors of your site to return.
Tools to Find a Profitable Niche
So, how do you go about finding a profitable niche?
Many SEO tools, such as a favorite known as Semrush, are available to help you begin your keyword research, but you will quickly find out that those tools require a significant monthly investment.
You don’t have to make this type of investment, though, if you are willing to do the legwork.
Google Trends
One of the best places to start your keyword research is the Google Trends tool. Google Trends tracks the trending Google search terms over a set period, which is a good starting point for your research.

Google Keyword Planner
With Google Trends open in one tab, look through topics that pique your interest. Write down a few ideas on a sheet of paper, and under each idea, start brainstorming terms that you associate with each topic.
When you have a nice healthy list of topics and terms, your next stop is Google Keyword Planner.
The Google Keyword Planner is a free tool that allows you to search specific key terms and see how often those terms get searched, how much competition you would have for each term, and how difficult it will be for you to rank for each term.
Getting free access to the Google Keyword Planner is a little tricky because they repeatedly push you to set up a paid account – you do not have to do this!
AHREF’s offers a helpful step-by-step article on getting free access to the Google Keyword Planner tool.
You aim to find topics and key terms that are often searched, with low competition and a relatively low difficulty rate.
These are the seeds you will use for your niche website.
Semrush
I personally use Semrush. While it’s one of my more expensive marketing tools at $99 per month, it’s my favorite tool in my marketing stack.
Not only does it provide amazing keyword data including a set of frequently asked questions for each topic, it performs SEO Audits, has a content calendar, backlink tool, a competitive analysis gap, and so much more.
My personal favorite tool within Semrush for bloggers is the SEO Content Template. It allows me to enter any topic (long-tail keyword phrase), and it will tell me the average word count for that phrase, the LSI or semantically related keywords, where to get backlinks from, and more.
Do Your Research.
Once you have a good-sized list of options, your next step is to research each highly searched, low competition, low difficulty topic in depth.
As you research, find out the topic’s breadth and ask yourself the questions we mentioned above.
Is there enough content to write about this niche?
Is this niche something that will keep my interest?
Is there an opportunity to monetize this niche?
If you don’t have any luck finding your “jackpot,” start the process again. There are countless opportunities out there; you have to be willing to put in a little work to find them.
Profitable Niches
To help you get started, we have come up with some good starting points based on the last year of search history in Google Trends.
Solar Energy
Solar energy is becoming increasingly popular as efforts to be more eco-conscious are being emphasized. The popularity of solar energy may also have something to do with the tax incentives offered to those who use renewable energy sources!
Regardless of why more people choose to convert to solar energy, their choice is an opportunity for you to monetize content.
By Google Keyword Tool’s estimation, “solar energy” currently receives between 10,000 to 100,000 searches every month. Keyword tool “SpyFu” estimates this more specifically at 35,500.
There is also very low competition for “solar energy” as a key term.
The current bid for the top of the page using Google Ads is between $3.10 and $11.01.
Further use of the Google Keyword Plan tool also gives us topics of interest that are notable, topics of more specific focus. In the case of “solar energy,” suggestions include:
- Tesla solar roof
- Geothermal energy
- Renewable resources
- Renewable energy sources
- Hydropower
These key term suggestions are all low competition, high traffic key terms that can help you narrow your niche website’s focus and provide you with topics for content for your site.
Smart-Home Devices
As smart-home devices are advancing at an incredible rate, the number of homes without smart technology is dwindling.
With so many gadgets to choose from, though, consumers need guidance, which is the opportunity that you have been looking for.
Not only is there a lot of newsworthy content in this niche, but it is also a niche that offers plenty of monetization opportunities.
You might choose to do product reviews, giveaways, or news about upcoming gadgets and your thoughts on those gadgets once they are released.
By Google Keyword Tool’s estimation, “smart home devices” currently receives between 10,000 to 100,000 searches every month. Keyword tool “SpyFu” estimates this more specifically at 39,400.
There is, however, very high competition for “smart home devices” as a key term.
The current bid for the top of the page using Google Ads is between $1.86 and $7.45.
Since the term “smart home devices” doesn’t fit our criteria for a low competition key phrase, the keyword tool offers further suggestions.
Now we have the option of shifting gears to one of those options as our main topic of focus.
The Google Keyword Plan tool suggests the following options:
- Connected homes
- Home smart
- Home assistants
- Smartliving
- Connected home
Vegan
The vegan lifestyle is becoming increasingly popular as more celebrities credit the lack of animal products for their amazing weight loss transformations.
The vegan lifestyle is also becoming a popular way of life among the eco-conscious.
As the popularity of the vegan lifestyle increases, there is the perfect opportunity for vegans and soon-to-be vegans to monetize content within this niche.
By Google Keyword Tool’s estimation, “vegan” currently receives between 100,000 to 1 million searches every month.
Keyword tool “SpyFu” estimates this more specifically at 102,000. There is also low competition for “vegan” as a key term.
The current bid for the top of the page using Google Ads is between $1.17 and $2.20.
Again, we turn to the Google Keyword Plan tool for more topics of interest that fit our search criteria and suggestions include:
- Vegan food
- Vegan diet
- Vegan meals
- Vegetarian food
- Vegan desserts
All of these suggestions are perfect for a more focused website without creating too narrow of a focus.
Cryptocurrency
You can’t help but notice the increased use of Cryptocurrency over the past few years, but lately, Cryptocurrency is hitting all-time highs, and more people are talking about the use of digital currency.
As an exceptionally broad field of interest, Cryptocurrency gives you plenty of “wiggle room” when it comes to narrowing down your topic of focus.
However, you could focus on the broader topic, too, while still keeping your website visitors interested.
By Google Keyword Tool’s estimation, “cryptocurrency” currently receives between 100,000 to 1 million searches every month. Keyword tool “SpyFu” estimates this more specifically at 355,000.
There is also very low competition for “cryptocurrency” as a key term.
The current bid for the top of the page using Google Ads is between $1.08 and $4.36.
More digging with the Google Keyword Plan tool offers more key term suggestions, including:
- Cryptocurrency prices
- Crypto
- Altcoin
- Cryptocurrency list
- Crypto prices
Hair Styling
With quarantines left and right and increased social interaction restrictions, COVID-19 has prompted a surge in at-home hair care.
A vast topic, this is a key phrase that needs some tweaking, but it’s an excellent place to start with the Google keyword tool.
You can take various directions with a hair styling niche website, including “how-to” articles, hairstyle suggestions, and general hair care tips.
By Google Keyword Tool’s estimation, “hairstyling” currently receives between 100,000 to 1 million searches every month.
Keyword tool “SpyFu” estimates this more specifically at 1,000, so there is some discrepancy and a need for further research.
Using the Google Keyword Plan tool, we get some better key phrase options:
- Hairstyles for men
- Cute hairstyles
- Long hairstyles
- Shoulder-length hairstyles
- Easy hairstyles
These more focused terms are a much better topic to concentrate on if you do create a hair styling niche website.
They each have low competition and high traffic but are much easier to monetize and attract website visitors.
This topic also performs well on Pinterest, Instagram, TikTok, and Youtube.
Buying Stock
As more people have found themselves out of work due to COVID-19 and more people have time on their hands, buying stock has become a trending topic of interest.
But again, this is a very broad topic, so we need to turn to the Google Keyword Tool to get a better focus.
There are many websites out there dedicated to buying stock, but it’s still possible to have a successful niche site with the right key term.
By Google Keyword Tool’s estimation, “buying stock” currently receives between 100,000 to 1 million searches every month.
Keyword tool “SpyFu” estimates this more specifically at 1,100, which indicates the need for more research.
Turning to the Google Keyword Plan tool gives us more reliable key terms to focus on, including:
- Airline stocks
- Cheap stocks to buy now
- Best penny stocks
- Penny stocks to watch
- Stocks to watch
These topics vary slightly from the initial subject of interest, but this will happen when you search for broad topics. So, from here, take a suggested key term and create a more narrow focus.
Self Improvement
Due to COVID-19, many people are considering working as a freelancer or improving their resume to increase their chances of gainful employment.
This event has led to an increase in the popularity of the always popular topic of self-improvement.
There is a lot of wiggle room for the self-improvement niche, which gives you many choices when it comes to carving out your niche website.
By Google Keyword Tool’s estimation, “self improvement” currently receives between 10,000 to 100,000 searches every month.
Keyword tool “SpyFu” estimates this at a lower number at 6,900. There is also very low competition for “self improvement” as a key term.
The current bid for the top of the page using Google Ads is between $1.21 and $4.71.
A little more use of the Google Keyword Plan tool, and we come up with additional related terms that include:
- Self development
- Self growth
- Motivational
- Inspirational
- Self help
Credit
Credit and credit cards are always in demand, but with COVID-19 straining everyone’s finances, it is a good opportunity to create your niche website that focuses on lesser-targeted areas of credit.
There are many options for the keyword “credit,” so, again, you have a lot of leeway for choice.
But be sure to avoid the more traditional search terms like “credit card,” which are exhausted and highly competitive.
By Google Keyword Tool’s estimation, “credit” currently receives between 100,000 to 1 million searches every month.
Keyword tool “SpyFu” estimates this more specifically at 79,200. There is also very low competition for “credit” as a key term.
The current bid for the top of the page using Google Ads is between $1.42 and $4.70.
Further use of the Google Keyword Plan tool lets us narrow our choices to a more targeted term, for example:
- Credit score range
- Good credit score
- Average credit score
- Raise credit score instantly
- Unfreeze credit
Off the Grid Living
Off the grid living is another topic that has risen dramatically in popularity over the past few years. TV shows and reality shows have only increased the appeal of this type of lifestyle.
Off the grid living is also an excellent opportunity for monetization since plenty of products and books are available that fall into this arena.
This is also an excellent opportunity to share advice if the idea of living off the grid appeals to you.
By Google Keyword Tool’s estimation, “off the grid” currently receives between 10,000 to 100,000 searches every month.
Keyword tool “SpyFu” estimates this more specifically at 10,500. There is also very low competition for “off the grid” as a key term.
The current bid for the top of the page using Google Ads is between $1.48 and $6.73.
A little more work with the Google Keyword Plan tool gives us more key term options to choose from, including:
- Going off the grid
- Homesteading
- Urban homesteading
- Off-grid building
- Self sufficiency
SEO and Digital Marketing
As it has been for the past few years, SEO is still a big market with a huge audience.
Your challenge is to create a niche site with a unique approach offering unique content compared to the many other SEO sites online.
However, it’s important to know that SEO and digital marketing are not fields that you can “fake it ’til you make it,” so you do need to know the field before you build a niche site in this keyword realm.
By Google Keyword Tool’s estimation, “SEO” currently receives between 100,000 to 1 million searches every month. Now, SEO is too broad of a category for your site to stand out in this niche, so we turn back to the Google keyword tool.
Suggestions that are more targeted and make for a better niche website include:
- Digital marketing agency
- SEO Company
- SEO Agency
- On-page SEO
- Local SEO
Drones
Drone technology is reaching beyond professional fields, and drones have now become a hobby for many people worldwide.
As a growing hobby and a growing industry, there is plenty of room for monetization within this niche.
There are a few ways to monetize this niche, but perhaps the best opportunity would be for product reviews and recommendations.
“Drones” is too highly competitive as a keyword for a niche site, but using the Google keyword tool, there are several alternative options with lower competition including:
- Videodrone
- UAV
- The Drone
- Drone racing leagues
- Drone service
Keto Diet
The Keto diet is among the more popular dieting methods over the past year, and it’s a diet that offers some great monetization opportunities.
When you create a niche site in the keto diet arena, you can take a few approaches, including a recipe-based site, a site tracking individual progress on the keto diet, or an educational site.
While the term “keto diet” is too competitive for a niche website, the term “ketosis” is a great fit for a niche site,
By Google Keyword Tool’s estimation, “ketosis” currently receives between 100,000 to 1 million searches every month. Keyword tool “SpyFu” estimates this more specifically at 108,000. There is also low competition for “ketosis” as a key term.
The current bid for the top of the page using Google Ads is between $0.11 and $2.37.
With a little help from the Google keyword tool, other key phrases that are a good fit for this niche include:
- Keto dinner ideas
- Keto calculator
- Keto lunch ideas
- Keto fast food
- Keto dinner
