Just when I was about to spend an obscene amount of money upgrading the 27″ Mac from Apple, I learned that we could upgrade the memory ourselves. I’m always up for a DIY Hack if it’s easy. Upgrading the Ram in the 27″ Mac is just that – easy!

How to Upgrade The Memory/RAM in your 27″ Desktop Mac.

Here are the step by step instructions to upgrading your 27″ Mac desktop computer.

  1. Order your 27″ Mac and RAM

Get the 8 Gig model when you order your 27″ Mac. From your favorite tech store, order the RAM that you want to upgrade your computer. Most people choose an upgrade to 32 Gigs, 64 Gigs, or 128 Gigs which will max out the memory.

  2. Carefully, Position your Mac

On a blanket or towel, lay the 27″ Mac face down so you can access the small hatch. be sure your mac is unplugged during this procedure.

  3. Open the Hatch

Near the plug, find the small rectangle hatch. You do not need to remove the computer stand to access it. Find the button near the plug and push it to pop open the hatch.

  4. Remove the Memory Cards

Gently remove the memory cards that are pre-installed in the 27″ Mac. Put them aside later as they can be sold, saved, or donated.

  5. Add the new Memory Cards

There are 4 slots. If you are only using 2 slots, space them with an empty slot in between. If you have 4 memory cards, insert them one by one. You will feel them lock into place.

  6. Close the Hatch

If your cards won’t slide back into the computer, you may need to pop one or two out and replace them again. Once your cards will drop back into the hatch, you can simply replace the hatch and push down on all 4 sides to lock back into place.

I paid $588 for 128 Gig Memory Cards rather than the $2000 that I would have paid upgrading the RAM to 128 Gig from Apple!
